Many times in our daily lives halachic questions arise and topical doubts arise.

Rabbi Shai Tahan, head of the Sha'ari Ezra community and head of Beit Erzi HaLebanon, makes the laws accessible to us and answers questions asked in the Beit Midrash and outside of it.

And this week: a woman carrying a weapon - what is the Halacha's position?

Question

:

Peace and blessings to the Rabbi.

After Mrs. Ben Gabir posed for a photo with a gun, many made noise against her claiming that she was violating a Torah prohibition since it is halachically forbidden for a woman to carry a weapon, which led her to explain that there is no such prohibition for a woman passing through a dangerous place, such as the roads she travels every day which are a place of immediate danger The stones on vehicles and those who shoot live fire.

These things created a dispute in our synagogue among the worshipers as to whether she was indeed right or not and we wanted the rabbi to please settle the matter for us.

Hello dear synagogue worshipers.

Answer

:

Here is an answer to your question already given in the Shu'at Yehuva Da'at (Ha Siman Na) to Maran HaRa Yosef ztzal, as well as in the Moshe Acts (Och 4 Amud Kamet) to Rabbi Moshe Finstein ztzal, and I will summarize the words briefly There

is indeed a prohibition for a woman to carry a weapon, as we learned from the verse: "A man shall not have a weapon against a woman" (Deuteronomy 22:5), and the Gemara said (Nazir Nat. A man over a woman." And so it was ruled in the Shulchan Aruch (Yod Siman Kefav SA): A woman shall not testify as a witness to a man such as if she puts a bonnet or hat on her head or wears armor and the like.

But instead of endangering souls, all the prohibitions of the Torah are rejected, and of course this prohibition is also rejected, and as Rabbi Yehuda the Chasidim wrote in Sefer Hasidim (Simen R): "Women who walk on the road and watch lest they be harmed by the unbelievers, it is permissible for them to walk in the clothes of foreigners and gird themselves with a sword." From this, the Bah has already ruled that a prohibition is not stated that a woman should not have a man's tool on a woman except where she does so for adornment and decoration, and also that she does so for adornment and decoration, this prohibition is not stated unless her intention is to resemble a man, but if her only desire is to protect herself and her children from The people of Belial must be ordering her to do so.

And among this rest is also to practice and learn how to use the weapon so that they know how to activate it when commanded.

May these things only be in the scope of 'demand and get paid', and that they never come to fruition.
