MOSCOW/WASHINGTON, DC - Amidst the Ukraine war, US and Russian officials are scheduled to hold talks starting Tuesday (November 29).

The topic: nuclear disarmament.

However, shortly before the planned meeting in Cairo, Vladimir Putin's government "unilaterally postponed".

Apparently for the time being without proposing a new date.

This was initially announced by the US State Department at night (CET).

This was later confirmed by Putin's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

When asked about the reasons for the surprising turnaround, Russia kept a low profile.

Actually, the so-called "New START" treaty on the reduction of strategic nuclear weapons should be discussed in Egypt's capital by December 6th.

Both sides should listen to each other's allegations.

There is a need for discussion, above all, on mutual inspections of weapons.

According to a report by the AFP news agency, the Kremlin announced in August that it would suspend US inspections.

This was Russia's response to Western sanctions "obstructing inspections" at US sites.

"We haven't had a really solid answer from the Russians as to why they postponed the meeting," US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

You will now try to find out what happened: "It is important - not just important for our two nations.

It's important for the rest of the world.” In the past, Putin had stated that the “New START” agreement was not without alternatives for him.

The US State Department has now emphasized that it is ready for talks as soon as possible.

The inspections would be a priority in order to preserve the agreement as an instrument of stability.

Kirby said, "We'd like to see it put back on the schedule as soon as possible." Under the treaty, Washington and Moscow committed to reducing their nuclear warheads to a maximum of 1,550 each.

The then US President Ronald Reagan and the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev had been negotiating the first START treaty since 1982.

The states only agreed in 1991.

The successor "New Start" was last extended by five years in February 2021.

"START" stands for "Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty".
