What does Mexico need to reach the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar?

After the defeat against Argentina on Saturday, the chances of the Mexican team to reach the round of 16 in the World Cup in Qatar were seriously compromised.

However, even if only mathematically, El Tri's classification is still possible.

With two games played, Poland leads Group C with 4 points.

They are followed by Argentina and Saudi Arabia with 3 points each —Argentina is in second place by goal difference— and the team led by 'Tata' Martino is in last place with one point after the draw with the European team and the defeat against the albiceleste.

What does Mexico need to reach the round of 16 in Qatar?

The first thing you need, yes or yes, is to win the game of the third date against Saudi Arabia that will be played on Wednesday, November 30.

Both a loss and a draw would leave them sinking to fourth with 1 or 2 points, depending on the case, and they would go home without advancing to the next phase for the first time since Argentina 1978.

However, even winning against the Saudis, their luck depends on what happens in the match between Argentina and Poland to obtain the round of 16 ticket.

And, if he manages to qualify, he'll do so in second place.

It's over!

Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 and qualify for the round of 16

The Portugal team won 2-0 this Monday against Uruguay, in a match corresponding to day 2 of Group H of the World Cup in Qatar.

With two goals from Bruno Fernandes, the Lucitanos took victory, which already automatically classifies them to the round of 16 of the tournament regardless of what happens in the last group match.

For its part, Uruguay remains at the bottom of the group with 1 unit and a goal difference of -2.

To qualify for the round of 16, the South Americans need a victory against Ghana on matchday 3 and hope for a draw in the Portugal vs.

South Korea or a victory for the Europeans.

If the Uruguayans win but South Korea does the same, we will have to wait for the goal difference (the Koreans have -1).

If Ghana wins against Uruguay or draws, the South Americans will be out of Qatar.

Check here the summary of the match.

Portuguese goal!

Bruno Fernandes makes it 1-0 against Uruguay

Nine minutes into the second half, Portugal took the lead 1-0 against Uruguay.

Bruno Fernandes sent a cross to the middle of the big area and Cristiano Ronaldo jumped to the shot.

In an intense game but with few scoring chances, Uruguay and Portugal ended the first half goalless.

The Uruguayan Rodrigo Bentancur was the one who had the clearest opportunity to score, when after minute 30 he led the ball from midfield to the Portuguese area, and there he took off three rivals to shoot on goal.

Despite the great effort, goalkeeper Diogo Costa denied him the score.

Argentina managed to keep the illusion alive in Qatar after beating Mexico 2-0 on Saturday. However, they still have not secured a ticket to the round of 16.

These are the mathematics behind Group C of the 2022 World Cup.

With two games played, Poland leads Group C with 4 points.

They are followed by Argentina and Saudi Arabia with 3 points each, but Argentina is in second place for the best goal difference (it has +1 while the Asians have -1) and Mexico is in last place with one point after the draw with the European team and the defeat against the albiceleste.

The World Cup brought some changes to Qatar.

Will they last?

By Eoin McSweeney, Mohammed Abdelbary

Qatar is unrecognizable in comparison to the country it was 12 years ago, when it won its bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Some $220 billion has been invested in building an entirely new city, a metro system state-of-the-art and hundreds of new hotels and residential buildings.

Like other countries that have hosted major events, Qatar has been under the scrutiny of the international community.

At the same time, its own population has been exposed to international ideals, as well as changing cultural and social norms, in anticipation of the influx of more than a million soccer fans to their small country.

"Qatar has changed a lot in the last 12 years and culturally this has had a huge impact," Ali Adnan Abel, a 30-year-old Qatari soccer fan, told CNN.

"We have seen greater diversity which has made Qataris realize that it is time to put down the shields."

It was difficult for Brazil, but they were left with a laborious 1-0 victory over Switzerland, which gives them the qualification to the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar.

Casemiro, 37 minutes into the plugin, scored the only goal of the match, which was generally even.

Even Switzerland had several situations to get ahead before the Canarinha goal.

Thus, Brazil joins France as the only two teams that have already secured their place in the round of 16.

The United States coach asks to focus only on soccer before the meeting with Iran

By Reuters

United States head coach Gregg Berhalter gives a press conference at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) in Doha on November 28, 2022, on the eve of the Qatar 2022 World Cup soccer match between Iran and United States.

(Photo by PATRICK T. FALLON/AFP via Getty Images)

United States coach Gregg Berhalter insisted his team is focused solely on Tuesday's Group B matchup against Iran, while avoiding the controversial politics surrounding the match, sparked by decades of feud between the two nations. .

In a tense and unusual news conference Monday, Berhalter was questioned about US naval and immigration policy, while US Captain Tyler Adams was questioned about discrimination in the United States and reprimanded by an Iranian reporter for mispronouncing the word. country name.

Washington and Tehran severed all formal diplomatic ties in 1980 after the Islamic Revolution, and bilateral relations turned hostile when their soccer teams met in the group stage of the 1998 World Cup.

Ties have been strained in recent years after then-President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of a nuclear deal with Iran.

The United States killed a top Iranian general in 2020 and Tehran responded with missile attacks on US forces based in Iraq.

Iran won a famous 2-1 victory in the 1998 tournament, a match widely considered the most politically charged in World Cup history and dubbed at the time the "mother of all soccer matches."

"That game sticks in my mind and burns," Berhalter told reporters ahead of the Group B clash.

"I was commenting on that game on Dutch television. What I saw from the opening whistle is a team that really wanted to win the game and another that didn't. Iran was very committed, very focused. And for us to have a chance tomorrow, that will have to be be the mentality".

The United States could clinch a spot in the knockout round with a win, while Iran only needs one point.

"We know exactly what Iran is going to bring, and we don't want to make the same mistakes that we have made in the past," Berhalter said.

"We want to learn from that and be able to put it into practice."

Iranian players have been drawn into a political crisis at home, pressured by protesters seeking to challenge the legitimacy of the country's clerical rulers to publicly side with them and condemn a deadly state crackdown.

The United States Soccer Federation temporarily displayed the national flag of Iran without the emblem of the Islamic Republic on social media to show "its support for the women of Iran who fight for basic human rights."

The players were not consulted about the decision to modify the flag.

"I can only reiterate that the players and staff were unaware of what was being posted. Sometimes things are out of our control," Berhalter said.

"All we can do on our behalf is apologize on behalf of the players and staff, but it's not something we've been involved in... Of course, our thoughts are with the Iranian people, with the players and with everyone." the country, but our attention is focused on this game".

"I don't want to sound distant or lighthearted by saying this, but the guys have worked very hard over the last four years. It's a knockout game, both teams are desperate to get to the next round. That's how we approach this game."

"We are in solidarity with all humanitarian causes," says the director of Iran, Carlos Queiroz

By Sammy Mngqosini, Zayn Nabbi

Iran's coach, Carlos Queiroz, declared this Monday at a press conference that his team "is in solidarity with all humanitarian causes" and that the United States is the best team in its group at the World Cup.

"We stand in solidarity with all humanitarian causes around the world, whatever they may be," Queiroz said.

"Whether it's talking about human rights, racism, children who die in school shootings, we stand in solidarity with all those causes. But here our mission is to bring smiles to all people for at least 90 minutes, That is our mission," he said.

The starting XI that played in Iran's first World Cup game against England on November 21 did not sing the national anthem before kick-off, and the players appeared to make a strong statement, in what appeared to be a show of solidarity with those who protest in Iran.

The players fell silent as the Iranian national anthem played around the Khalifa International Stadium and the match ended in a 6-2 victory for England.

As the anti-government protests entered their third month in their home country, on the other side of the Persian Gulf, speculation mounted about how the players would handle the situation.

In recent weeks, many other athletes have spoken out in support of the protesters, and several sports teams have refrained from singing the anthem.

However, Iran's players joined in singing the national anthem before last Friday's game against Wales in the World Cup, which the team won 2-0.

Speaking about the last game in Group B, Queiroz said: "The team that gave the two best performances in our group was, without a doubt, the United States."

"They had two fantastic games, without a doubt," he said.

Queiroz said he had no comment when asked to explain Iranian soccer culture in response to criticism from former world champion and BBC Sport commentator Jurgen Klinsmann that he has clashed with Iran's soccer federation.

Iran's state media called on Sunday for the United States to be kicked out of the World Cup after the United States Soccer Federation changed the Iranian flag on its social media platforms to show support for protesters in Iran.

Will Depay start against Qatar?

Louis Van Gaal is not in such a rush

By Reuters

Dutch striker Memphis Depay will not rush to return to the starting line-up for the Netherlands' final Group A match against hosts Qatar, coach Louis van Gaal said Monday.

The Netherlands leads the group with four points, along with Ecuador, and both teams have identical records, so goal difference could be necessary to decide first place.

After two defeats, Qatar only has pride at stake this Tuesday, and on paper, the Dutch should win easily.

When asked if Barcelona striker Depay, who has recovered from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for two months before the World Cup, only started on the bench against Senegal or Ecuador, Van Gaal sounded cautious.

"We are not going to take chances with Memphis Depay," Van Gaal told reporters.

"To be world champions we need Memphis, so we'll do everything we can to make sure we get to the next round, because that's what it's all about."

Saturday's all-star showdown ended in a 1-1 draw between world champions Germany and Spain.

The two entered the game in very different positions, with Spain sitting atop the Group E standings after a 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica.

Meanwhile, Germany were bottom of the standings and trying to bounce back from a shock loss to Japan.

Even with the tie, Spain remains in control of their destiny with four points, alone at the top of the group.

Germany is still alive with a point, but they have work to do in their next match against Costa Rica, and will need some results to break through.
