The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Monday that "mpox" —monkeypox in English— is now the name to refer to monkeypox.

Both names will be used simultaneously for one year while the term "monkey pox" is phased out, the agency said.

The disease received its name in 1970, more than a decade after the virus it causes was discovered in captive monkeys.
