The elected officials of the Métropole de Perpignan Méditerranée are divided on the idea of adopting a low emission zone (ZFE), which some consider

The preparation site for the low-emission zone (ZFE), which should concern 15 of the 36 municipalities of Perpignan-Méditerranée Métropole (Pyrénées-Orientales), generates waves and air currents.

Monday evening, November 28, the community delegates adopted a motion opposing the establishment of this EPZ.

By secret ballot, the motion of no confidence obtained 37 votes.

And 34 elected officials voted against this text, which demands that Perpignan leave the national system targeting around forty medium-sized cities, after having interested the large regional metropolises.

“On this motion, we even rallied opposition elected officials in Perpignan.

If we pursue the project as it was imposed by the administration, the poorest of this department, itself among the poorest in France, will be prohibited from going to town.

Under the suggested conditions, it is considered that 197,000 vehicles will no longer be able to circulate freely in the Metropolis of Perpignan.

In any case in the fifteen municipalities interested in the ZFE.

These ZFEs are a Parisianist decision served by a totally shifted vision of the territories, of our territory.

It is purely punitive ecology, ”asserts Xavier Baudry, elected RN of the town hall of Perpignan, who defended this motion before the community assembly.

It obtained the involvement of many elected officials from the municipalities concerned.

Consultation work still in its infancy

“I myself am surprised by the adoption of this motion.

We are going to take into account the remarks it contains, even if the consultation work that we are being asked to do here is already very advanced within the framework of the steering committee for this file.

We have already started working with all the professionals who have to travel to the Metropolis.

No later than next Tuesday, we will present the project to the citizen development committee of Perpignan-Méditerranée”, answers Marc Médina, mayor of Torreilles and vice-president in charge of sustainable development.

He wanted to reassure elected officials by indicating that the ZFE plan was not set in stone, that the consultation work had only just begun, and that the environmental situation could make it possible not to deprive cars classified as Crit'Air 3 of access to the EPZ.

The famous Crit'Air 3 category is the stumbling block in most cities, since it concerns many contemporary diesel vehicles.

The Metropolis of Perpignan works in partnership with the prefecture of Pyrénées-Orientales to establish the zoning and the conditions of use of this ZFE.
