Housing too expensive, digitization non-existent: An international ranking sees Frankfurt as one of the world's worst cities for emigrants.

Frankfurt am Main – Frankfurt is one of the worst cities in the world for international immigrants.

This is according to the Expat Essentials Index, an international ranking of cities.

Frankfurt ranks last in the “Expat Essentials Index” (50th) and also ranks in the bottom 10 in all subcategories. Frankfurt is 47th for digital life, 46th for language, 45th for administrative issues. and in housing at 43rd place in the ranking.

The reasons for this poor performance are manifold.

Almost two out of five respondents are dissatisfied with the city's online administrative services (39 percent in Frankfurt compared to 21 percent worldwide).

For many internationals, cashless payment is extremely important.

In a global comparison, Germany is blatantly far behind.

In the survey, 37 percent of participants answered that they were dissatisfied with the options for making cashless payments in Frankfurt; worldwide dissatisfaction is 8 percent.

Frankfurt: Housing and standard of living too expensive

The Frankfurters are familiar with the cost of housing.

This is also reflected in the survey results.

70 percent of those surveyed rated housing as too expensive, while 43 percent were dissatisfied with housing costs worldwide.

51 percent of newcomers are also dissatisfied with the general cost of living (compared to 35 percent worldwide), which puts the city in 41st place in the personal finance index.

The Ease of Settling In Index reflects the ease or difficulty of settling in a place.

Frankfurt ranks 48th here.

Newcomers find it difficult to find local friends (55 percent dissatisfied compared to 37 percent worldwide).

Adjusting to the local culture is also difficult for many (30 percent versus 19 percent globally).

Frankfurt performs slightly better, but still below average, in the index of working abroad (35th) and quality of life (31st).

Not only negative records: Frankfurt does well in the car infrastructure ranking

A positive outlier for Frankfurt is the infrastructure for cars, where the city does well with 10th place.

However, when it comes to the affordability of public transport, Frankfurt is rated the 50th worst of all cities worldwide.
