Latakia - SANA

The spread of houseplants in home gardens is a remarkable phenomenon among the people of Lattakia Governorate, and these crops provide their owners with a kind of self-sufficiency, and meet the needs of their families in terms of seasonal vegetables and fruits at the lowest costs and the best specifications.

Among the plants that people cultivate in their home gardens are leafy greens of all kinds, such as spinach, chard, parsley, mint, watercress and lettuce, legumes such as beans and seasonal vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, zucchini, cucumbers and potatoes, due to their health benefits and their use in preparing various types of foods.

Agricultural engineer Marouf Khaddam explained that during the last ten years, many families have taken advantage of the small limited spaces and home gardens and cultivated them with various types of vegetables, to secure their daily food needs, noting the success of this experiment in achieving self-sufficiency and facing the high prices and high cost of living.

Khaddam stresses the need for home farmers not to neglect fertilizing the soil and adding organic and inorganic municipal fertilizers, which contributes to improving productivity, especially since repeated plantings of the same crops stress the soil and deplete its nutrients.

One of those who grow vegetables in their homes is Mrs. Umm Ali (38 years old), who noted the success of her experience in home cultivation, because she found in it a complement to the requirements of the home and an ideal solution to dispense with buying, in light of the high prices of vegetables, while ensuring that a variety of healthy food is provided to her children free of Hormones and chemicals.

However, there are those who are attracted to home farming for other reasons, such as Mrs. Mayada (Umm Bashar), who found that dealing with young seedlings and monitoring their growth daily renews her energy and activity and makes her feel great pleasure while caring for the plants, such as watering, fertilizing and weeding, because they do not require specialization or deep knowledge. .

Abu Firas (78 years) talks about his close connection to the land, so he transformed the back garden of his house into a miniature farm containing various types of vegetables and fruits. The cost of living remained, due to the impact of these crops on the continued rotation of the wheel of agricultural production.
