After a life full of science and media, academic, literary and cultural work, the Yemeni Arab poet and writer, Dr. Abdel Aziz Al-Maqaleh, passed away at the age of 85, after suffering from illness.

The Union of Arab Writers in Syria mourned the poet, critic, and staunch patriotic figure, Dr. Abdel Aziz Al-Maqaleh, after he devoted most of his life to enriching the Arab library with many poetic and critical works that formed a distinguished cultural heritage in the literature treasury.

The head of the Arab Writers Union, Dr. Muhammad al-Hourani, said in a statement to SANA: “The Arab Writers Union in Syria, while extending its sincere condolences to all intellectuals and creators in Syria and the Arab world for this great loss, affirms that the late deceased was a unique intellectual stature on the Yemeni and Arab levels. With its lush shadow many students of science, knowledge and literature, and it was considered a civilized school whose sciences were drawn by successive generations of Arab poets, creators and intellectuals.

Al-Hourani added: “With the departure of Dr. Al-Maqaleh, the Yemeni, Arab and international cultural arena loses a unique cultural personality, a personality that had an authentic national presence in all literary and cultural forums,” noting that what the great late left of the cultural, literary and knowledge legacy will make him permanent presence and an immortal beacon for the people of the nation and its creators.

Abdel Aziz Al-Maqaleh was born in 1937 in the village of Al-Maqaleh, Yemen, and he obtained a master’s and doctorate degrees in Arabic language and literature from Ain Shams University in Egypt, where his writings were initially characterized by some classicism, but he soon opened up to modernity, and issued about 15 collections of poetry, along with His critical writings, studies and press articles inside and outside Yemen.

He held many positions, including President of Sana'a University, President of the Yemeni Studies and Research Center, President of the Yemeni Linguistic Scientific Academy, and Advisor to the Yemeni President for Cultural Affairs.

The late won many awards and honors, including the Knight Medal for Literature and Arts from France in 2003, the Poetry Prize from the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation in the Emirates, and the Ahmed Shawky Prize for Poetic Creativity from the Egyptian Writers Union in 2019.
