He did not wait for the completion of his five senses to make an inherited cultural history and develop it to draw through its beautiful shapes and sweet melodies a traditional craft that is passed on from one generation to the next. And I will teach it to my children after me.”

This is the voice of about 17 craftsmen who have mastered the formation and beautification of the Damascene oud from people of determination who lack the sense of hearing and speech, as they were embraced by Ziryab’s workshop for making ouds in Damascus, expressing their happiness in preserving that ancient Syrian cultural element, and transmitting it with perfect craftsmanship and boundless passion from one generation to another, drawing with their fingers. Gourmet ornament authenticity to their intangible cultural heritage.

“For 25 years I have been working in the Oud industry, dividing and installing its accessories.” These are letters conveyed verbally by his hand signals to explain the amount of love and passion that his heartbeat bears for that stringed instrument, which is affectionate with its maqams and sweet with its melodies.

He is Khaled Al-Hamwi, who learned the oud industry from the late Damascene artisan Ali Khalifa, where he dedicates his passion between the scent of cypress and walnut wood, and engraves ancestral symbols on its details.

As for Omran Haboul, who has been working in the workshop for 14 years, he carried with his heart part of that craft, and worked in the finishing and cleaning department of the oud to present to us the sultan of oriental instruments and the title of authentic rapture in his best suit, highlighting his famous Damascene image in dark and light brown colors decorated with mother of pearl and mosaic.

Likewise, Ghassan Musa, who has worked for ten years in finishing and installing accessories for the oud, loves this craft and works to develop its tools by all means. He is creative in presenting the oud in new and distinctive forms, while preserving its authentic identity.

The love of the Levant was the greatest motive for Muhammad Aoun to work in the craft of making the oud six years ago, and he spoke at great emotional length through the signs of his hands about his pleasure in digging and cleaning the oud and decorating it with the most beautiful accessories.
