The Chinese are rebelling: against the strict zero-Covid policy of Xi Jinping and the Communist Party.

Protests have been taking place across the country for the past week.

They're the biggest in decades.

When asked about the demonstrations on Monday, the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry was extremely taciturn.

»Given the widespread anger and frustration against the zero-Covid policy in China in the past few days, is China considering ending the policy and if so, when?«

Zhao Lijian, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman

"Can you repeat the question?"

Reuters reporter

»A question from Reuters: Given the widespread frustration against the zero-Covid policy, will China end it soon, and if so, when?«

Zhao Lijian, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China

»What you mentioned does not reflect what actually happened.

China is pursuing a dynamic zero-Covid policy.«

During the protests on Sunday in Shanghai, a journalist from the British broadcaster BBC was brutally arrested.

Reporter Ed Lawrence covered the protests there.

He was held in Chinese police custody for several hours.

"Hey, are you alright?"

'Call the embassy!

Now!"

And the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry also has his own perspective on this incident.

Zhao Lijian, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China

»There are a lot of foreign media in China.

How is it that it's always the BBC that gets into such trouble?

Are BBC journalists here to report or to create news?

The British side should respect the facts, act prudently and drop their double standards.”

The Chinese leadership has announced a "tough crackdown" on new protests and has massively increased the police presence.

China is in the midst of its biggest wave of infections since the pandemic began.

On Tuesday, the Chinese authorities reported more than 37,000 new infections with the corona virus.

The previous high was 40,000 new infections a few days ago.
