Double drama in Hawaii: simultaneous volcanic eruption for the first time since 1984 | Israel today

2022-11-30T21:16:04.182Z

The largest active volcano in the world, Mauna Loa, erupted a few days ago after a 40-year hiatus - and on Wednesday the nearby volcano "joined in" as well

For the first time since 1984, two volcanic eruptions are occurring simultaneously in the US state of Hawaii. While the world's largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, erupted on Sunday after a 40-year hiatus on the "big island" of the island chain, on Wednesday it was joined by Mt. The nearby Kilauea volcano, which is also on the "Big Island".

"This is something extremely rare," said the spokeswoman for the national park where the volcanoes in Hawaii are located, Jessica Perkine.

"For the people of Hawaii, this is a very significant event."

Mauna Loa, which as mentioned has been erupting for several days, is starting to become dangerous: now the lava is already reaching a few kilometers from the residents, although the authorities claim that there is no real danger to the houses

The lava, according to the photos, erupts to a height of 50 meters in several locations from the crater, which creates a kind of lava "streams" that flow down the mountain, and as mentioned, they reached almost as far as the island's highway.

The Civil Defense Agency said that "currently the lava flows do not threaten settlements, but it is strictly forbidden to park on the side of the highway in the entire area near the mountain, and any vehicle that does so will be towed."
