The former president of China, Jiang Zemin, passed away today (Wednesday) at the age of 96 after a long battle with leukemia.
According to a report by China's state news agency Xinhua, the veteran leader died of general organ collapse after a long illness.
Dze Min served as the country's president from 1993 to 2003 and led the country through a period of tremendous economic growth in which China became an economic and military power after years of lagging behind other Asian countries.
However, Dze Min will also be remembered in China as someone who had difficulty freeing himself from his influence in the Communist Party and remained the chairman of the country's Supreme Military Committee even after he retired from the post of president, which led to conflicts with his successor Hu Jintao. Dze Min will also be remembered for the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners that began during his tenure.
