Two years later, last winter, another IMA exhibition, “Jews of the East: A Millennial History,” opened on the largely unknown Khaybar, between Medina and al-Ula.

How did you discover it?

The first time I saw images of al-Ula was during a dinner at the fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa, with Prince Faisal Ben Salman, then governor of Medina.
