The member of Knesset from the Likud placed on the Knesset table a proposal that seeks to ban the waving of the Palestinian flag throughout the campuses • Whoever flies the flag a second time will be expelled for 10 years • An academic institution that does not cooperate will have its budgets revoked • Karai: "We will restore national pride"

Against the backdrop of the waving of PLO flags throughout Tel Aviv University during a cultural event held yesterday (Tuesday), MK Shlomo Karai of the Likud today submitted an amendment to the Higher Education Law, which will prohibit the waving of PLO flags and flags of a hostile authority throughout the campuses of universities and colleges throughout the country In addition, the bill proposes to define the Palestinian Authority as a hostile entity in the Penal Code, and thereby also its flag as flying the flag of a hostile authority.

In the amendment to the Higher Education Council Law, Karai also defines sanctions for a student or university that cooperates with the waving of Palestinian Authority flags in its territory.

The law stipulates that a student who flies the flag of a hostile entity will be suspended from the academic institution for six months.

If he swings again, he will be expelled from the academic institution and his right to an academic degree in Israel or recognition of an academic degree from abroad will be denied for 10 years.

According to the proposal, a faculty member of an academic institution who raised the flag of a hostile entity will be suspended for six months and if he repeats his actions again he will be permanently expelled.

Also, it is proposed that an institution that allows a hostile flag to be flown on its territory will be deprived of its budgets.

In the previous Knesset, MK Eli Cohen submitted a similar law that prohibits the waving of Palestinian Authority flags throughout the campuses, but the proposal was only passed in preliminary reading and has no continuity to the current Knesset.

MK Shlomo Karai said: "The incident we saw last night at Tel Aviv University will not happen again. The phenomenon in which Israeli refugees wave the PLO flag, symbolizing the desire to destroy our Jewish and democratic state, in the name of academic freedom, should disappear from the world.

"The bill I submitted states that it will be prohibited to fly an enemy flag, including the PLO flag, throughout the campuses and in general.

An academic institution that does not cooperate will have its budgets revoked.

We will raise the Israeli flag to the top of the mast and restore national pride," he concluded.
