Cecily Aguilar, who was arrested in 2020 in connection with the disappearance of soldier Vanessa Guillén, pleaded guilty Tuesday to involvement in the cover-up of her death, according to CNN affiliate KWTX and a lawyer for Guillén's family.

Aguilar pleaded guilty to one count of accomplice and three counts of making a false statement, KWTX reported.

Aguilar also waived his right to a trial, according to KWTX.

He faces at least 30 years in prison, a fine of up to $1 million and the possibility of 12 years of federal supervision once he is released from prison, KWTX reported.

CNN has reached out to Aguilar's attorneys for comment.

The main suspect in Guillén's disappearance was identified by officials as Private Aaron David Robinson, who shot himself after being confronted by investigators.

Aguilar was Robinson's girlfriend, according to KWTX.

“Cecily Aguilar's guilty plea today was another step on the long road to justice for Vanessa, my client, and her brave family.

We knew she was guilty, but her admission provides closure for Vanessa's family and friends, who deserve it," Guillen's family attorney Natalie Khawam said in a statement to CNN.

Guillen had been in Fort Hood, Texas, when she went missing in April 2020. Her body was found in a shallow grave on June 30, 2020.

When her remains were found, it emerged that she had been beaten to death with a hammer in the gun room where she worked and her body was transported from the facility by her killer, according to a lawyer for the family, who cited details shared with the family by researchers.

Zhengzhou, the Chinese city home to the world's largest iPhone factory, ends covid lockdown

By Juliana Liu

The central Chinese city of Zhengzhou, home to the world's largest iPhone factory, has lifted a five-day Covid-19 lockdown, in a move analysts called much-needed relief for Apple and its chief supplier, Foxconn.

Zhengzhou is the site of "iPhone City," a sprawling manufacturing campus owned by Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn that is normally home to about 200,000 workers who produce products for Apple, including the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

Last Friday, the city locked down its urban districts for five days as Covid-19 cases rose there.

Foxconn's huge facilities are not part of the city's urban districts.

However, analysts say the shutdown would have been detrimental to efforts to restore lost production on campus, the site of a violent worker revolt last week.

"This is good news in a dark storm for Cupertino," Daniel Ives, managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities, told CNN Business, referring to the California city where Apple is based.

"There is a lot of heavy lifting ahead for Apple to get the factories back."

Ives estimates that ongoing power outages at Foxconn's Zhengzhou campus were costing Apple roughly $1 billion a week in lost iPhone sales.

The troubles began in October when workers left the campus in Zhengzhou, the capital of central Henan province, due to Covid-related fears.

Short-staffed, workers were offered bonuses to return.

But the protests erupted last week when newly hired staff said management had broken their promises.

The workers, who clashed with security officers, were eventually offered cash to resign and leave.

Analysts said Foxconn's production problems will accelerate the pace of supply chain diversification from China to countries like India.

Suicide attack on a police car leaves at least three dead in Pakistan

By Saleem Mehsud in Islamabad and Asim Khan in Quetta

A suicide bomb attack in Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province killed at least three people and injured 23 on Wednesday, local police said.

The attack took place in the city of Quetta on Wednesday morning and targeted a police van providing security for a polio vaccination team, according to Quetta Police Deputy Inspector General Azfar Mahesar.

Mahesar told CNN that a woman and a child are among the dead.

The Pakistani Taliban (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on Wednesday, two days after announcing the end of the ceasefire agreed with the government in June.

In the statement, the TTP warned that they will continue their "revenge operations."

Japan court upholds same-sex marriage ban again

Japan's ban on same-sex marriage is not unconstitutional, another court has ruled, dealing a new blow to gay couples and activists seeking greater rights for the LGBTQ community in that country.

On Wednesday, the Tokyo District Court dismissed a lawsuit in which eight plaintiffs sought compensation from the government for one million yen (about US$7,200) per person, arguing that the lack of recognition of same-sex marriages violated their constitutional right to equality, according to public broadcaster NHK.

The Tokyo District Court ruled that banning same-sex marriage was in line with the constitution, NHK reported.

However, the court ruling encouraged Japan's parliament to create a new law that would allow same-sex couples to have families, as it would "strengthen the social fabric, which is good for society as a whole," Makiko Terahara said. a lawyer and representative director of Marriage for All Japan, told reporters on Wednesday.

The Tokyo District Court ruling was the third among similar lawsuits filed in five district courts across the country.

In June 2022, the Osaka District Court also ruled that Japan's ban on same-sex marriage was not unconstitutional.

The decision was in stark contrast to a landmark ruling by the Sapporo district court in northern Hokkaido prefecture in March 2021. At the time, the Sapporo court ruled that the government's failure to recognize same-sex marriage sex violated the constitutional right to equality.

Japan remains the only country in the Group of Seven (G7) that has not recognized either same-sex civil unions or same-sex marriage at the national level.

However, some parts of the country, including Tokyo, issue "couple certificates" that grant some rights to same-sex couples, such as allowing them to rent property and have hospital visitation rights.
