* In the era of the three points, Argentina is the third to lose the first game and still finish at the top of the house.
It was preceded by Spain in 2010 (after losing to Switzerland), who also won the World Cup, and Colombia in 2018 (after losing to Japan).
* Carlos McAllister, Alexis' father, made two of his three appearances for Argentina against Australia in the 1994 World Cup promotion playoffs. Now the son scored a debut goal and set up a meeting with the Socceroos in the round of 16.
