Mexico and Saudi Arabia, face to face: the statistics of their two matches in the World Cup

Mexico and Saudi Arabia play this Wednesday with the premise of winning to qualify for the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar 2022.

El Tri is forced to win and hope that Poland defeats Argentina.

Another result will force Gerardo Martino's men to get a good goal difference to have aspirations to advance.

The Saudis, who delivered the blow in their debut by defeating Argentina, will be in the knockout phase if they beat Mexico, regardless of what happens in the other game.

With a tie, they will have to wait for Argentina to lose or see the goal difference in the event of a tie or a South American win.

Look at the statistics of Mexico and Saudi Arabia in their first two matches in the World Cup in Qatar.

What Mexico needs to qualify for the round of 16

After the defeat against Argentina on Saturday, the chances of the Mexican team to reach the round of 16 in the World Cup in Qatar were seriously compromised.

However, even if only mathematically, El Tri's classification is still possible.

With two games played, Poland leads Group C with 4 points.

They are followed by Argentina and Saudi Arabia with 3 points each —Argentina is in second place by goal difference— and the team led by 'Tata' Martino is in last place with one point after the tie with the European team and the defeat against the albiceleste.

What does Gerardo Martino's team need to qualify for the round of 16?

The history of Mexico in the World Cups and the "curse" of the fifth game

From the first World Cup in 1930 to the last one held in 2018, Mexico's senior men's team has attended 16 World Cup tournaments out of a total of 21 that took place in that period, according to data from the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation. (RSSSF).

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be the 22nd world cup in history, so it will be the 17th for the Mexican team.

In the 16 World Cups already played, Mexico has had relevant performances, especially in the 1970s and 1980s;

meanwhile, in recent editions it has not been able to advance to the quarterfinals, to the famous fifth game.

Why is Mexico called "El Tri"?

What do their colors mean?

Mexico is one of the most recognized teams in the World Cups, and it is not for less: although it has never won it, it has organized it twice (1970 and 1986), it is preparing for a third (2026) and it has been in most of them (16 of the 21 disputed so far).

  • Why do they call Brazil "la canarinha"?

This team is also widely known as "El Tri".

Why?

How "Tata" Martino has fared as Mexico coach: titles, statistics and more

At 60, Gerardo "Tata" Martino seeks to be the man who catapults the Mexican men's team to where it has never been before: the semifinals of a World Cup.

However, the reality of him in the World Cup puts him on the verge of qualifying before the last date this Wednesday in Group C.

This is Tri's 17th participation in a World Cup, a team that has not missed a World Cup since 1994.

Martino is the third Argentine coach in the history of the Mexican team.

The first was CĂ©sar Luis Menotti (he directed 16 games between 1991 and 1992) and an old acquaintance of the fans, Ricardo La Volpe (71 games in charge of the team between 2002 and 2006).

Before Mexico, "Tata" has led two teams: Paraguay (66 games between 2007 and 2011) and Argentina (29 games between 2014 and 2016).

His best participation in a World Cup so far was with Paraguay in South Africa 2010, where the South Americans were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Spain, which ended up winning the tournament.
