The Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin, warned the Polish leadership against attempts to strip the lands of western Ukraine, and to hold referendums in it to justify its claim to Ukrainian lands.
Sputnik quoted Naryshkin as saying in a press statement today: We would like to warn the Poles in advance against making false and hasty comparisons, and we invite them to a more comprehensive study of their history, noting that their history is full of bitter examples of clashes between Polish nationalists and Ukrainian nationalists.
Naryshkin added: In order to legitimize the planned land acquisitions, the Polish leadership decided to use the successful Russian experience to return the ancestral lands by holding referendums on them, indicating that the Polish special services leaked to the Ukrainian media as an experimental balloon information about the alleged preparation of a referendum in the region Ukrainian Lvov on the subject of joining Poland.
Naryshkin pointed out that he met with CIA Director William Burns, and they discussed issues of nuclear security and the Ukrainian issue.
