Especially in autumn, many people buy firewood.
Therefore, the State Institute for Agriculture (LfL) in Freising reminds the people of Miesbach that special rules apply in their quarantine zone against the Asian long-horned beetle (ALB).
Since the start of control and monitoring in spring 2020, no further ALB infestation has occurred - a success that the LfL attributes to close monitoring with binoculars, pheromone traps, tree climbers and sniffer dogs.
Strict restrictions on the movement and use of deciduous wood also apply to the area within a radius of 2000 meters around the trees infested at the time.

In order to be well prepared for the firewood season, taking into account the special restrictions in the quarantine zone, every felling of hardwood with a diameter of more than one centimeter must be reported to the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (AELF) in Holzkirchen or to forest engineer Martin Fäth, ALB, two weeks before the start of the measure -Project specialist at the AELF, to be registered and also approved.
Forms are available at www.aelf-hk.bayern.de.

Trained ALB tracking dogs then check the felled hardwood on site using the field number.
This mission is organized by the AELF and is free of charge.
There are then three options for how to proceed: The wood remains on the floor number area from which it came until the end of the quarantine period.
"There it can either contribute to nature conservation by increasing the accumulation of dead wood, or it can be placed on top and stored with a clean cover as firewood," explains Fäth.
This will keep well and dry until the end of the quarantine period on December 31, 2024.
Registration required
The wood can also be processed on site as firewood or chips.
In both cases, registration with the LfL as a plant-producing company is absolutely necessary.
When logs are made, the wood must be dried to a core temperature of 54 degrees, which, according to Fäth, makes it very time-consuming and therefore expensive.
Wood chips as the most profitable option
The variant of wood chip production is therefore the most profitable, whereby a chip size of 2.5 centimeters edge length may not be exceeded.
But at least according to Fäth no drying is necessary.
After all, the wood can also be disposed of.
It is then chipped into a container on site.
The size of the wood chips is not specified.
However, transport to the incinerator – even outside the quarantine zone – must then take place in closed containers.
It is sufficient if the area is covered with a plastic sheet.
Important: No wood chips may fall out of the container.
A net cover is not sufficient.

Fäth therefore advises purchasing or producing firewood outside the quarantine zone: "The wood can then be driven into and through the quarantine zone and stored there without restrictions." But beware: As soon as the wood is in the zone, it can no longer be moved.
Fäth advises: "Firewood from outside the zone should always be stored on the floor number where it is to be burned."
