Survey: Most of the public - the education system is not relevant Israel today

2022-11-30T21:52:22.179Z

74% of the parents claim that the schools in Israel do not provide values for their students • About half of them believe that the teachers are not good enough • The CEO of the Trump Foundation for Education: "We have failed in trying to keep up with the pace of changes in the 21st century"

In the work of putting together the government, there are struggles over the finance and security portfolios, but so far no clear demand has been heard for the education portfolio - one of the most significant positions, whoever fills it will encounter a system that is very difficult to change.

To date, the great ideas that the ministers have come up with have often ended with a weak response, and parents also share this feeling: according to a survey conducted by the Trump Foundation, approximately 42% of parents have no confidence in the education system's ability to lead significant reforms, renew and change.

Parents attach tremendous importance to education, as the second most important issue for the future of the State of Israel - above security and below the cost of living - but the data should trouble whoever enters the office responsible for the future of our children.

About 76% of parents, according to the survey, expressed low satisfaction with the functioning of the education system in Israel.

It also shows that 64% of the parents are worried about the high number of students in the class, and about 74% believe that the schools have become a factory for grades and do not provide the students with values.

As for the quality of learning, about half of the parents (51%) claim that the teachers who teach in the classrooms are "not good enough", and 56% believe that the most important contribution of the education system to their children is in imparting social skills, while imparting knowledge lags far behind with only 31%.

Also, 57% of the parents claim that the contents of the studies in the schools are not relevant for the 21st century - a claim that was also heard by the state auditor, and is similar to the findings of the reports designed to examine the Israeli education system.

The survey was conducted by the Trump Foundation as part of the international education conference "Describe To you", with the participation of leading education experts in Israel and the world. The survey was carried out using the sample company and the iPanel internet panel, among 501 interviewees, parents of children aged 6-17, from a representative sample of the adult population in Israel.

Abolish the reforms

Last week, the Likud party published its demands in the coalition negotiations, including free education for ages birth to 3, but at the same time, the cancellation of the reform of the current Minister of Education, Yifat Shasha Biton, and the return of the compulsory matriculation exams in the subjects of history, Bible, literature and citizenship were considered.

Recall that the new reform abolishes the external exams in these subjects and turns them into multidisciplinary theoretical work in each of them.

This is alongside new study methods and assignments that until now were not required of the students, and were supposed to provide them with various tools such as academic skills.

According to Eli Horvitz, CEO of the Trump Foundation for Education, "We live in a world of information and a crazy rate of change.

The parents stated in the survey that the main problem in education is the failure to keep up with the pace of changes, to the point that education is no longer relevant to the future of our children.

Waiting for the next minister.

"In recent years, the education system has begun to take important steps designed to allow schools to jump into the 21st century, but this is a task that most of it is still waiting for the next minister or ministers of education."
