Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin died today at the age of 96, after suffering from cancer.
Xinhua news agency quoted a statement issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council of the People's Republic of China, in which they said: "Former President Tzemin died in Shanghai, due to leukemia and the failure of many vital organs after the failure of all medical treatments."
The statement added: “The former Chinese leader was a well-known (as an eminent leader with high status) and a long-acclaimed communist militant, the main founder of the Three Represents theory.
Jiang assumed power in 1989 and led China, the world's most populous country, to become a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.
