There were fights on Twitter, an app to calculate the distance between Canelo and Messi and comments from many athletes. In the end, the Mexican boxer acknowledged that he was carried away by passion and asked for forgiveness.

After the diatribe over a video of Lionel Messi in the locker room and a barrage of tweets in which he fought with journalists, athletes and commentators, Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez acknowledged that he was wrong.

The Mexican boxer, who had criticized Messi for a video in which he appears to inadvertently kick the Mexico shirt, has apologized for the warning (for some it threatens) against the Argentine striker on social media.

"These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and I made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina," Canelo said on Twitter.

"Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn," added the boxer.

Canelo had angrily criticized Messi's gesture after Argentina's victory over Mexico: "Did you see Messi cleaning the floor with our shirt and flag?" Álvarez tweeted on November 27 initially this Sunday on his Twitter account, which has 2.3 million followers.

There is no indication that Messi intentionally kicked the shirt, rather it appears to have been done accidentally when removing his boots.

This was not only made known to Canelo by numerous tweeters, but also by soccer players from different countries, including the Mexican Andrés Guardado, Mexico's starter in this World Cup.

"Let him ask God that he doesn't find it for me!" Álvarez had added at that time in a tweet accompanied by two fist emojis, an enraged red face and a flame.

The posts went viral.

Guardado, who played the match against Argentina, told the press: "Unfortunately, maybe Canelo doesn't understand what you live in a locker room, and that's why I can understand the reaction of being offended by seeing the Mexico shirt in the I usually".

Guardado explained that it is an "agreement" with the props to leave the clothes that will be washed on the floor.

CNN contacted Canelo Álvarez's team for a statement about what was posted on Twitter.

The communication team of the Argentina national team told CNN that they would not comment on the matter.

Canelo ended the dispute this Wednesday with this other message before the defining matches of the group stage: "I wish both teams much success in their matches today and here we will continue supporting Mexico until the end 🇲🇽🇲🇽 🇲🇽".

Canelo's fights in the Twitter ring

Canelo's comments on networks caused a lot of conversation and the boxer continued his tirade and responded to several personalities who questioned him for what some consider was a threat on his part.

The Mexican-Israeli sports journalist David Faitelson responded to Canelo: "Why, instead of wasting time on cheap controversies, don't you look for a rematch with the Russian (Dmitry Bivol)? Look, threatening a soccer player seems very cowardly to me... ".

Canelo in turn responded with insults.

Sergio Agüero, Messi's former teammate in Argentina, responded to Álvarez on Twitter: "Mr. Canelo, don't look for excuses or problems, surely you don't know about football and what happens in a locker room."

"The shirts are always on the floor after the games are over because of the sweat and then if you see well, he makes the movement to remove the booty and accidentally hits it," Agüero said.

Canelo's response was to call Kun Agüero a "hypocrite".

Canelo Álvarez is widely considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers after winning world championships in four weight classes.

The subject generated so much debate that even some fans created the 'Messimetral' app that calculated the geographical distance between Messi and Canelo to see if they could meet at any time.
