In power since 1979, Obiang was re-elected without surprise in this Central African oil country which he holds with an iron fist and in the face of a muzzled opposition, according to results announced on Saturday.

"Given the extent of the irregularities observed and the results announced, giving 94.9% of the votes to the PDGE

(the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea, party of the president, editor's note)

, we have serious doubts about the credibility"

of the ballot, said tweeted Ned Price, spokesman for American diplomacy.

The election, held on November 20, was accompanied by

“credible allegations of systematic irregularities

,” Ned Price continued.

“We urge the government to respond to these allegations of voter fraud.”

With more than 43 years, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo holds the world record for longevity in power for a living head of state, excluding monarchies.

The 80-year-old patriarch leads one of the most closed and authoritarian regimes in the world.
