Some are gathering dust in a box in the attic, others are enthroned above the fireplace in the living room... Since Friday and until December 2, the Ministry of the Interior has launched an operation "
simplified abandonment of arms to the state
in order to recover or register undeclared weapons kept in French homes.
Beyond the five million legal gun owners, the country has between five and six million guns inherited or found undeclared, according to Interior Ministry estimates.
During this week, volunteers can drop off firearms, handguns, bladed weapons or small ammunition in one of the 300 temporary “armodromes” without risking prosecution.
Already 21,000 weapons and nearly 600,000 ammunition have been abandoned, welcomed Gérald Darmanin on Sunday, adding that 5,500 weapons had meanwhile been registered.
But this operation is far from appealing to all concerned and sometimes arouses questioning and mistrust.
