The city of Garching expects increasing numbers of refugees.

In order to accommodate them, there is the option of expanding the facility on Echinger Weg.

99 new containers could be set up there.

Garching – The city of Garching is preparing for more refugees.

99 accommodation containers with a total of 198 beds could be set up on Echinger Weg.

There would also be 33 containers for common rooms and 12 for ancillary rooms.

Containers are not an unknown sight on the Echinger Weg.

Families who fled their home countries, applied for asylum and were granted asylum have been living there since 2015.

Many are so-called false occupants who should actually move out of the containers and also want to, but cannot because there are no apartments for them.

This circumstance, but also the renewed influx of refugees, make the construction of new accommodation "unavoidable", explained Susanne Kohler, who is responsible for the accommodation of refugees in the Munich district office.

“Urgently need more accommodation”

On average, 110 refugees would arrive in Munich every day, and a bus with 50 people would have to be distributed to the district every week.

These people have no place in the shelters built in 2015 because they are occupied.

"So we urgently need more and new accommodation places," said City Councilor Brigitte Schmolke (SPD).

Especially since it is also uncertain how long the refugees accommodated in private households can stay there.

There are currently 370 refugees living in Garching, including ten Ukrainians who are being accommodated by the state and another 182 who are living in private accommodation.

Based on the number of inhabitants, however, the city would have to accommodate 377 refugees.

According to the district office, new capacity must be created, otherwise it will be “full in six months,” said Kohler.

Two more options

There are three options available in Garching.

The expansion of the container facility on Echinger Weg, and plots of land are also available on Heideweg, east of the autobahn and on Professor-Angermair-Ring.

The property on Heideweg would be developed as a turnkey property by the owner and offered to the district office for rent, while the area on Angermair-Ring would have to be developed by the district authority itself.

However, both alternatives did not find favor with the city councils due to the existing zoning plans.

Basically, there were still doubts.

Mayor Dietmar Gruchmann (SPD) wants to send an answer to the district office by the December meeting at the latest, for which of the three variants the city council is in favor.

Questions remained unanswered as to how day-care centers and schools could support further influx of children.

"Especially in Sprengel West, the classes are already very large this year due to a lack of teachers," emphasized Susanne Liebl from the Department of Education and Social Affairs in Garching Town Hall.

For Ulrike Haerendel (SPD), increasing the number of accommodation places makes sense, since “most of the privately accommodated people have already gained a foothold here and also want to stay in Garching.

It is my priority that the community is preserved.”
