In the event of an extreme power shortage, Switzerland plans to severely restrict the options available to its citizens.

Drivers of electric cars are hit particularly hard.

Zurich – electricity shortage – that is the word of the year in German-speaking Switzerland.

According to an analysis of databases, the word appeared frequently in language use, as the jury of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) announced on Tuesday.

She chooses the most striking words from these and from suggestions from the audience and places them in a ranking list.

The word describes a possible power shortage.

It has been on everyone's lips, especially since the summer, because the Confederate government has been working on a phased plan with, in the worst case, massive restrictions on use in the event of a power shortage.

In fact, drastic measures are planned in the emergency plan.

In stage three of the emergency plan - i.e. in the event of an extreme power shortage - the Swiss will find themselves severely restricted in their everyday lives.

Drivers of electric cars are hit particularly hard.

The list, which belongs to the "Ordinance on Restrictions and Bans on the Use of Electrical Energy", reads: "The private use of electric cars is only permitted for absolutely necessary journeys (e.g. professional practice, shopping, visiting the doctor, attending religious events , observance of court appointments)." This measure would affect around 110,000 e-car drivers in Switzerland, whose mobility would then be severely restricted.

But it is also planned that in the event of a severe power shortage, electricity will be saved everywhere: laundry may only be washed at a maximum of 40 degrees, the use of tumble dryers and irons will be prohibited and the use of streaming services and gaming computers will be extremely restricted .

Refrigerators may no longer be operated at temperatures below six degrees.

The list consists of draft regulations.

The Swiss government's plan is to adjust the measures depending on the current situation and only then to put them into effect - in stages.

In Germany, the government advises building up emergency supplies, but there are currently no plans for mandatory electricity-saving measures in the event of any shortages.

However, like in Germany, the blackout risk in Switzerland is rather low.

However, regional partial blackouts of a few minutes to an hour could occur, says a spokeswoman for the national grid operator Swissgrid when asked by the AWP news agency.

In addition, extreme weather events such as storms can lead to regional power failures.
