The elevated tank for the water supply in Grafrath has to be renovated.
This could cost almost 900,000 euros.
Grafrath – It is not yet clear whether this will also affect water charges.
That depends on whether the refurbishment is assessed as normal building maintenance or as an investment.
"A serious statement about an impact on the fees is not possible at the moment," says Mayor Markus Kennerknecht (independent).
It is currently being examined how the renovation is to be classified.
In the case of a pure maintenance measure, the costs would have to be allocated one to one to the fees for the year of the construction work - which would probably result in a significant increase.

By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular
FFB newsletter.)
If the elevated tank is not only restored, but even improved compared to its original condition, the costs can be amortized over 40 to 50 years.
They would then be included in the fee calculation over this period and would therefore not be so noticeable for the citizens.
According to Kennerknecht, it is conceivable that the costs will also be divided into maintenance and investment measures.
Certain Claims
In principle, a renovation cannot be avoided in the medium term, as a planner explained to the municipal council.
The building is said to be in good condition.
However, the coating on the inside no longer meets the technical and hygienic requirements for a drinking water storage facility.
But you don't have to worry about the quality of the water.
The condition of the elevated tank has not yet had a direct impact on hygiene.
Nevertheless, according to the planner, the municipality should carry out the renovation in the next four to five years.
The municipal council wants to start with the exterior of the elevated tank.
The costs for this amount to around 340,000 euros.
When the interior will be renovated for another 550,000 euros is still open.
