One of the oldest trees in Oberschweinbach was to be felled.

An expert found that the old willow tree by the pond was infested with fungus.

But now a rescue attempt is being made.

Oberschweinbach - Therefore there is a risk that branches will break off or even the tree will tip over.

For the time being, however, it will only be massively shortened - so that it may sprout again.

Heavy fungal attack

Fruiting bodies of the sulfur polypore have been discovered in the pasture.

According to the expert, the fungus grows from the base of the trunk up to the trunk via the fork.

This fungus causes massive brown rot and is one of the most aggressive wood-decaying fungi.

Unfortunately, the willow is one of the tree species that does not seal this fungus well.

From the point of view of the district's tree inspector, the pasture should therefore be felled for safety reasons.

The tree at the pond in Oberschweinbach is very old.

Based on the trunk diameter, one can assume 80 to 100 years.

community must act

The community has been made aware of the danger and needs to take action now.

The administration recommended cutting down the tree and planting a larger specimen as a replacement.

A result other than the necessary precipitation is not to be expected, it is said.

"It's difficult for me to fell such beautiful and old trees," said Mayor Norbert Riepl (CSU/DG) in the municipal council.

He called the pasture "local".

But there is hardly any other option than to cut down the tree.

One could at most discuss just cutting off the crown.

If the stability of the pasture is questioned, says Riepl, “then we would also have to shave the second half of the Kastanienallee.

But that's not my thing.” The chestnuts are big and old, but not sick.

Riepl warned against massive resistance from the citizens.

In recent years, it has always been the goal of the municipality to preserve trees for as long as possible.

Under Mayor Bernhard Schulze, six old chestnut trees had to be felled - but they were sick.

And the lime tree?

Franz Neheider (CSU/DG) advised against felling the pasture: “You can cut it 50 to 80 centimeters above the ground – and it will sprout again.” Andreas Marschner (CSU/DG) agreed: “The Willow grows fast anyway.”

In addition to the chestnut trees in the avenue, there is a large linden tree in the monastery courtyard, which is also under surveillance.

"You should have them looked at again," said Deputy Mayor Claudia Steber (CSU/DG).

Deadwood was only cut out there in the spring, Riepl replied.

The panel agreed that the trees in question should be preserved for as long as possible.

The municipal council unanimously voted to have the willow at the pond only severely shortened for the time being - so that it can sprout again.
