Li Zhiying, the founder of Next Media, was involved in the case of collusion with foreign forces. Due to the sudden release of the law, the case has been postponed until December 13th.

The prosecution revealed in court that the interpretation proposed this time will mainly require the National People's Congress to clarify whether overseas lawyers can come to Hong Kong to participate in national security law cases, or the extent to which they can participate. If the National People's Congress agrees to the interpretation, it will be the first interpretation of the National Security Law law, so it is very important.

The judge adjourned the case until December 13.

Seeking clarification on whether overseas lawyers can participate in national security law cases

Zhou Tianxing, deputy prosecutor of the Department of Justice, explained that the application was postponed because of "new and significant developments" in the matter of hiring legal representatives in Lai. Therefore, Chief Executive Li Jiachao requested the National People's Congress to interpret the law 3 days ago to clarify overseas lawyers. Can you come to Hong Kong to participate in national security law cases?

Li Zhiying hired British Queen's Counsel Tim Owen, which caused a disturbance in the interpretation of the law.

It will be the first time to interpret the law on the national security case

Zhou said that the chief executive's request for the interpretation of the law has received support from all walks of life. If the National People's Congress agrees to the interpretation, it will be the first interpretation of the national security law, so it is extremely important.

Moreover, the interpretation of the law involves a wider scope, including clarifying the extent to which overseas lawyers can participate in national security law cases.

He hoped that the court would respect the power of the National People's Congress to interpret the law, and he was confident that the National People's Congress would accept the chief executive's request, and begged the court not to allow the trial to continue until the National People's Congress interpreted the law.

The defense accused the Immigration Department of obstructing Pan Guan's decision

Peng Yaohong, a senior barrister representing Jimmy Lai, responded that the Chief Judge of the High Court, Pan Zhaochu, had granted a "special case permission" to Tim Owen, the British Queen's Counsel whom Lai wanted to hire, as early as October 19 this year. and the Court of Final Appeal appealed, both of which upheld the original judgment.

And Tim Owen has also been to Hong Kong several times, and now he has been granted a work visa for another criminal case.

But Peng said that even so, until yesterday the Immigration Department still refused to grant a work visa to Tim Owen for the Li case, and bluntly stated that the reason "only they know best".

Peng believes that the immigration department's approach is to obstruct Pan's decision.

When Li Zhiying was escorted to the High Court this morning, the security was significantly strengthened.

As for Lai's earlier statement that he would apply for a permanent termination of the hearing for the case without a jury, Judge Du Libing said that Lai had submitted a written statement and asked if it could be dealt with now, so as to avoid wasting time by repeatedly adjourning the case.

Peng responded that there is no assistance from Tim Owen at present, and he will make supplements on the application, so he thinks it is not appropriate to deal with it today, and the court did not hear the relevant submissions in the end.

The trial schedule will be rescheduled after the interpretation of the law

Zhou Tianxing also said that if the interpretation of the law is dealt with, the prosecutor can inform the court of the expected trial timetable.

The prosecution originally only applied for a postponement of the trial for 7 days, but Judge Li Yunteng believed that it would be more pragmatic to postpone a few days.

Zhou agrees.

The last three judges adjourned the case until December 13, and asked the prosecution to submit a timetable to the court one day earlier.

After Li Zhiying was brought into the court, he made a heart gesture to his wife and daughter.
