Drinking water has not been collected in the old elevated tank on Schmidschneiderstraße in Herrsching since 1982.

Now the old water tank is being reactivated – as a service water tank.

Herrsching

- Under announcements, Herrsching's mayor pointed out the reactivation of the old elevated tank on Schmidschneiderstraße in the most recent municipal council meeting.

A new pump, gate valve and overflows were installed for a total cost of only 1720 euros.

Water that has been channeled unused over many years into the Ammersee via the surface water canal will in future be available to the Ammersee Waste Water and Water Works (AWA) as well as the Herrschinger building yard as process water.

Josef Fiedler came up with the idea.

The manager of the canal operation has been with the AWA for 36 years and has been thinking about using the spring water for a long time, which is no longer of drinking water quality, but still seemed precious to him.

With his idea, this should now also be expressed in figures.

The old elevated tank, which is not far from the new elevated tank but is hidden away on Schmidschneiderstraße, has been shut down for 40 years.

The entrance to the earth container is overgrown, seems almost enchanted and is hardly visible from the street directly in front.

The water has not been collected since the closure, but ran directly into a pipe and further into the Ammersee.

Fiedler already had the idea of not letting the precious water go unused and initially came up with the idea of generating energy using a turbine.

It turned out that not enough spring water flowed down the slope at ten to 15 liters per second, depending on the weather.

When the water pipes were renewed this year, the 62-year-old from Frieding came up with the idea of using the water as process water for system irrigation and sewer flushing, for which valuable drinking water had previously been used.

Quite a bit, as the building manager Josef Mörtl confirms.

Depending on the weather, his depot employees would need about six cubic meters of water three times a week from spring to autumn.

With a water price of currently 1.55 euros per cubic meter, the municipality of Herrsching can not only afford drinking water in times of water shortages,

but also save a lot of money.

"The idea was great." With these words, not only does Mörtl applaud the AWA employee, AWA board member Maximilian Bleimaier and the chairman of the board of directors, Herrsching's mayor Christian Schiller, also applaud him.

The AWA can also save with this, because their flushing vehicles for sewer flushing can also be filled with this water in the future.

Such a car holds twelve cubic meters, around two cubic meters would be needed every day - all year round.

"That makes a difference," says Fiedler.

He is pleased that the water is finally no longer "just running away".

The conversions that were necessary for the future use of service water did not cost more than 1720 euros.

The work is already completed, new overflow pipes, a new valve and a pump installed.

Since then, spring water has been collected again in one of the two basins with a capacity of 140 cubic meters.

The building yard now wants to prepare the space in front of the elevated tank.
