Overcrowded prisons, too slow criminal proceedings, lack of resources, archaism... Justice in France is sick.
And according to a recent survey, almost three-quarters (73%) of respondents believe that it works poorly.
An “
action plan
” resulting from the conclusions of the Estates General of Justice was to be unveiled this Wednesday, but the Keeper of the Seals Éric Dupond-Moretti finally postponed this announcement to January.
Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, prisons are emptying, and the government has closed many prisons in recent years.
The country has gone from around 20,000 prisoners in 2004 to 11,000 in 2020. And above all, in this highly urbanized country, with immigration and poverty rates quite similar to those of France, the Netherlands has 54 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants according to the penal statistics of the Council of Europe in January 2021, i.e. almost half as much as France.
