The steering wheel is in the hands of the offenders: the investigation of harassment in public transportation Israel today

2022-12-01T07:07:23.637Z

New evidence reveals another side of the phenomenon of sexual harassment in Israel • A year has passed since Shabbat 17 she was harassed by a bus driver and he is still employed in Agad • The company: "our hands are tied"

Following the publication of the investigation that dealt with the widespread phenomenon of sexual harassment in public transportation, the "Israel Hayom" system received evidence of additional injuries occurring on buses.

Among them stood out serious testimonies about drivers who used the great power they have in their hands in order to harass female passengers during their work.

One of the victims is a minor from Kiryat Gat, who was 17 years old when she was blatantly harassed by an "Egged" bus driver, while returning from a family event in January.

The minor and her family members have experienced hell since the injury, and they demand that justice be done.

"The presumption of innocence applies to every citizen, as well as every bus driver."

According to them, Egged did not apologize, did not inquire about the girl's physical and mental well-being, and did not try to offer any other help.

Moreover, the offending driver continues to be employed by the company.

"The family has fallen apart since the incident," the father painfully tells Israel Hayom.

"I don't send my girl to the club, and I don't send my girl to the beach. If I can't rely on public transportation - then what's left for me? I'm not ready for the police to close the case for lack of public interest! If it was a celebrity's daughter, the world would turn upside down Because we are simple people from Kiryat Gat, no one cares."

Life did not return to itself

The minor, who studies in the twelfth grade, describes that since the incident her life has been turned upside down and that she suffers from severe anxiety, does not use public transportation and refuses to leave the house without an escort. "How can it be that the person who ruined my life continues to work at Egged?" I demand that this driver not come into contact with people," asks her mother.

Egged's response: "During a police investigation of an incident characterized as criminal, we must obtain prior permission to carry out independent actions for fear of disrupting the work of the police, as stated. This is the reason why we are passive with our hands tied regarding the investigation of the complaint.

"The presumption of innocence applies to every citizen, as well as to every bus driver, until proven guilty. Egged and its drivers demonstrate zero tolerance for violence in general and sexual violence in particular, and we denounce from our ranks weeds whose guilt is proven in law as having committed such offenses while on the job."
