Positive discrimination programs in North America have long been wrapped in a form of rhetorical precaution.
They did not claim to favor individuals from minorities per se, but to favor them on condition that they had "equal skills" with an individual from the majority group.
This modesty is no longer in season, we saw it this week in Canada.
Frédéric Bastien is a recognized historian.
Having all the required qualifications, he recently thought of applying for a position
at Laval University in Quebec.
He found that he simply had no right to do so.
Why?
Better to quote the job posting:
“Only applicants with the required skills AND who have self-identified as a member of at least one of these four underrepresented groups (women, Aboriginal people, people with disabilities
and person belonging to a visible minority) will be selected.”
