The group stage of the 2022 World Cup closed tonight (Friday) with a disappointing display by Brazil, who even before the meeting against Cameroon secured their place in the round of 16.
A victory for the Selção would have made them the only ones with a perfect record after three games, and if they had done so "on zero" they would also have been the only ones to keep a clean sheet in 270 minutes, but in extra time Vansen Abubakar gave 0:1 to Cameroon - which, despite the big surprise, ended its journey following Switzerland's win over Serbia in the corresponding fixture, while top-placed Brazil at home will face South Korea in the round of 16 on Monday at 9pm.
Tita changed almost the entire lineup in the final round against the Africans, who knew that only a victory would leave them a chance to qualify for the stage, but the attacking players Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Antony Rodrigo who came up together were unable to subdue goalkeeper Davis Apasi who provided spectacular saves.
On the other hand, the Cameroonians tried with all their might to subdue Ederson and got their reward in the 90th + 2nd minute with a big hit by Abubakar, who out of excitement took off his shirt during the goal celebration and for that he paid with a second yellow card and a red card which has not changed anything.
This was Brazil's first loss in the group stage in the World Cup since 1998 and luckily for them they kept first place, because another goal from Cameroon and/or Switzerland and they would have dropped to second place and then meet Portugal in the round of 16.
In Brazil, at least they will be consoled by the distribution of minutes to the players of the general staff, including the 39-year-old Dani Alves.
