On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Family House Association held today, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, the first medical awareness conference entitled “Disability between Diagnosis and Rehabilitation” under the supervision of a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, psychiatrists and special education doctors, in the Dumar Cultural Complex in Damascus.
The conference axes focused on diagnosing disabilities, shedding light on rare syndromes, mental health, dental treatment, mental arithmetic for people with disabilities, executive functions for autistic children, speech and language development and associated disorders, and vocational rehabilitation for Down syndrome.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association, Suhair Salloum, stated in a statement to SANA that the goal of the conference is educational and comprehensive for all medical specialties, to introduce how to deal with persons with disabilities, noting that the number of beneficiaries of the Association has reached 85 persons with disabilities from the age of two years and above. Various services are provided to them from Intellectual development to educational access to autonomy and integration.
UNICEF Ambassador in East Asia, Dr. Suleiman Maasrani, pointed out in his lecture entitled “The Importance of Work for People of Determination” to the importance of focusing on integrating people with disabilities into society by developing their skills and training them in a range of jobs that they can practice to be productive in society.
In his role, consultant psychiatrist, Dr. Muhammad Al-Shugairi gave a lecture on the autism spectrum, how to deal with it, symptoms and signs according to the criteria for diagnosis and pharmacological management of the movements accompanying it and controlling it pharmacologically, indicating that the essence of autism disorder is the lack of social, linguistic and mutual interaction with the environment.
Dr. Rashid Darwish, a special education specialist, explained that the initial diagnosis is the basis for therapeutic intervention, pointing out that the symptoms present in autistic children were explained by a defect in their executive functions.
For her part, Dr. Bushra Barakat, a faculty member at the Faculty of Education, Damascus University, drew attention in her lecture on “Speech and Linguistic Development and the Disorders Associated with it” to how to detect children and the tests that must be conducted for them, pointing to the importance of detection in young age stages and alertness to indicators and diagnosis through speech tests Comprehensive application of the treatment plan for children, focusing on their strengths, taking into account their mental abilities.
On the third of December, the countries of the world commemorate the International Day of People with Disabilities, to remind them of their rights and provide everything they need in order to contribute an active role in societies and plan for a future that includes them more in order to build a more equitable world for them.
