The sensational loss to Saudi Arabia in the opening round left Argentina stunned, but after that they managed to recover with two victories and returned to the course that was destined for them in advance.
She finished at the top of Group C and if no more surprises happen along the way, she will meet Brazil in the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup, as everyone expected.
But to get there she has to cross two more hurdles, the first of which is the surprising Australia.
The Socceroos also achieved two victories in the group stage (for the first time in history) after the loss to France in the opening round of Group D and returned to the round of 16, a stage in which they played only in 2006 (loss to Italy following a penalty by Francesco Totti in extra time).
To create a real sensation, they will have to beat Argentina for the first time since 1988, when since then they have lost five more meetings and drawn one.
Lionel Messi, in his 1,000th career game, hopes to continue the journey in his fifth and final World Cup, this time without Angel Di Maria by his side.
Papo Gomes took the place vacated by a completely unfit Juventus midfielder, and Julián Albers continued at the edge at the expense of Lautro Martinez.
Mitchell Duke continues Australia's attack which made one change to the 11: Craig Goodwin dropped to the bench and his place was taken by Keanu Bacchus who started for the first time in the tournament.
