Germany's hesitant farewell to its Far East policy

At first, public opinion had little knowledge of the big mistake made by Germany in its relations with China.

Twenty-four hours before New Year's Eve 2020, Brussels and Beijing had created a surprise by announcing a new era.

Europe and China wanted to open up to each other to business and financial flows by concluding an investment agreement.

The deal was largely brokered by German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

They had reached an agreement at the last minute, a few hours before the end of the German presidency of the Council of the EU.

It was another Nord Stream moment in German foreign policy.

Just as the Federal Republic had made itself dependent on Russia for cheap pipeline gas, it now tied its fate even more closely to a communist dictatorship…
