Mexico seizes 300 kilos of fentanyl detected in coconuts heading to the US border.

The Mexican Attorney General's Office reported this Friday the seizure of some 300 kilos of fentanyl, which were detected in palm coconuts that were transported in a truck bound for the border with the United States.

According to the images, the fruits were split in half and

inside they carried bags with hundreds of blue pills,

presumably fentanyl.

The discovery comes after the drug returned to the center of the debate in the case of a baby who almost lost his life after apparently intoxicating himself with fentanyl in a park in San Francisco, and in a series of cases of children and adolescents who have result exposed to the drug.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has assured that there is "a wave of fentanyl and methamphetamine being pushed from Mexico to the United States."

However, authorities have dismantled clandestine laboratories that produce the pills on US soil, with a recently busted fentanyl manufacturing network in California.

Drug overdoses have already become the leading cause of death for young people in Los Angeles County. 

Hundreds of blue pills

The Mexican prosecutor's office indicated in a statement that agents of the institution, attached to the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC), found in the state of Sonora, northwestern Mexico, "approximately 300 kilograms of a substance with characteristics of fentanyl," in a vehicle carrying coconuts.

The seizure of the substance occurred in a stretch of highway that leads to Puerto Libertad, a town and port in the state of Sonora, which is located on the northern coast of the Gulf of California, in the municipality of Pitiquito, some 93 miles (150 kilometers ) from the border between Sonora and Arizona, United States.
