Some 8,500 soldiers and 1,500 police officers surrounded the municipality of Soyapango, on the outskirts of the capital, early Saturday morning, President Nayib Bukele reported on Twitter.

The authorities surrounded this populous municipality, about ten kilometers from San Salvador, in search of gang members.

"Ordinary citizens have nothing to fear and can continue to lead their lives normally. This is an operation against criminals, not against honest citizens," the president said on his Twitter account.

The operation, according to Bukele, is part of the fifth phase of the Territorial Control plan, which according to the authorities consists of the extraction of gang member communities that have not yet been detained during the current emergency regime.

The police assured that during the implementation of the fence that began this Saturday they would carry out preventive searches in order to locate people wanted by the courts.

According to the authorities, as of November 29, more than 58,000 people had been detained since the establishment of the emergency regime, on March 27.

The government imposed the emergency regime in response to a spike in violence that in a single day left 62 homicides.

The measure, which is valid for 30 days, has already been extended eight times.
