Giving a presentation at school, speaking in front of a lot of people, maybe even strangers: For many, it's a nightmare.
Not so for a Groebenzeller.
She can talk everyone up against the wall and recently even received an award.
Gröbenzell – Standing on an empty stage in front of an audience and giving a lecture – without a manuscript.
Without a lectern to hold on to.
Without a Power Point presentation, to give the many pairs of eyes something else to look at than themselves.
Many people will probably break out in a sweat with fear on their foreheads.
Not so Christina Flegl.
The 53-year-old loves such performances.
And her success proves her right – recently she even received an award for her oratory.
Speaker Slam
The optician from Gröbenzell won the twelfth international speaker slam in Mastershausen in Rhineland-Palatinate - just like that, out of the blue.
147 participants from 18 nations applied for the title.
Flegl talked them all to the wall.
"I was nervous," she says, looking back.
“But I am not afraid of lectures.
I think that's easy for me."
Everyone was free to choose their topic.
The optician spoke about her specialty – good vision, or to be more precise, about glasses and vision in the digital age.
That affects everyone and should have secured her a base of public interest.
Her rousing presentation technique, paired with a portion of humor and catchy, easily understandable explanations did the rest.
"Anatomically, our eyes are still from the times of the hunters and gatherers," Flegl made clear to the 200 listeners.
“Today, however, we use them as precision instruments.
It's incredibly stressful for the eyes."
(
By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular
FFB newsletter.)
She spoke about dioptres and lenses, about eye corrections and visual acuity.
She gave tips on what you can do for your eyes after hours of work in front of the screen - "squint, look into the distance, get up and go outside every now and then".
The whole thing also had to be compact, because after four minutes the microphone was mercilessly switched off.
The presentations were evaluated by a jury and the audience using an applause measurement.
At the end of the event, which lasted several hours, Christina Flegel received the winner's certificate from the organizer Hermann Scherer.
It is now hanging in the shop in Gröbenzell.
professional academy
Participation in the speaker competition did not require any special preparation, says the 53-year-old.
"I've been in the field for 25 years." She's been running her own practice for that long.
She also taught at the specialist academy for ophthalmic optics and found that her style goes down well with the audience.
"My classes were popular."

In addition to her business, the mother of two adult children now wants to expand her lecturing activities.
She will soon be heard as a speaker at the Munich University of Applied Sciences.
In addition, she has already produced the first episodes of her own podcast.
It is about, for example, the vision of babies and small children or the possible connection between eye and school problems.
"And there is the option of a teaching position," says Flegl.
"I am really looking forward to these new tasks."
