Cologne – Actually, the World Cup should be a reason to celebrate.

Fans from all over the world come together, wave colorful flags and cavort to cheer together in the stadiums or in a relaxed atmosphere in front of the television.

But this year there is a shadow on one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

Sharp criticism of Qatar, the host country, has led to calls for a boycott in many places, and most people don't really seem to have any team spirit - neither among the fans nor among Sarah Engels (30) and her celebrity colleagues.

Sarah Engels usually shares more personal snapshots on social media or tells her almost 1.8 million Instagram followers about her colorful family life, but lately the former DSDS finalist has increasingly spoken about more serious topics.

After the World Cup ambassador from Qatar attracted attention with misogynistic and homophobic statements in mid-November, Pietro Lombardi's ex-wife sharply criticized the incident on the image platform and wrote: "I find such topics so frightening and hope that the reporting is exactly for it is used that things are moving in a different direction.”

In a question and answer session with her fans, the topic of the World Cup came up again and Sarah gave a clear answer as to whether she and her husband Julian Engels (29) – who is a footballer himself – are following the competition:

The soccer World Cup has been running in Qatar since November 20th.

Usually it's weeks of excitement and anticipation, but this time scandal and controversy cast a shadow over the event.

Above all, the questionable conditions that prevailed during the construction of the new stadiums and led to many deaths were sharply criticized in advance by organizations such as Amnesty International.

"I find a lot of the rules totally funny and that totally ruins the sporting event," says the disappointed voice of Cologne.

"It's a pity, because sport has always given people a lot and I say that, which actually has little to do with it."

Even if she's not a passionate foosball fan - a global event, where the advertising drum is beaten for months and for which the biggest music stars write anthems, usually brings everyone together.

"I know how excited we were about the European Championships even in the time of Corona," Sarah remembers.
