Engineer Fakher Al-Kabbani, a graduate of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Department of Renewable Energy Engineering, created a system to raise the efficiency of solar panels cells used to generate electric power, by cooling them when their temperature rises and heating the water without the need for additional space on the roof.

And about the design idea, Al-Kabbani explained that this was done by integrating two systems, which are the electric power generation system through solar panels with the water heating system, and thus the high temperature of the solar cells is used to heat the water.

This design works according to Al-Qabbani by merging the two systems together, so that the photovoltaic cells system is located at the top and the water heating system underneath it at the bottom. Obtaining hot water and at the same time cooling the photovoltaic cells by 8 degrees Celsius, which reflects positively on increasing their efficiency in generating electrical energy.

Regarding the economic feasibility of the design, Al-Qabbani explained that it provides warm water in all seasons of the year that can be used for household needs, floor heating, etc., in addition to saving costs in using clamping iron, instead of using two separate systems and using a locally made copper heat exchanger instead of imported evacuated tubes to heat water. Expensive.

As for the difficulties that faced the project, Al-Qabbani pointed out that it was mainly represented by the absence of financial support for its implementation, which prompted him to design it on a computer program through a simulation of the city of Damascus, hoping that he would be able to produce it completely to enter the market actually.

For her part, Dr. Amina Fares, Department of Renewable Energies, saw the importance of this project within the global trend towards renewable energies, and what this design provides in terms of saving electricity and helps in heating water and increasing the amount of electricity generated from these panels, especially by using varieties of panels of greater quality, calling for the help of student projects from Through the adoption of these innovations by the Ministry of Industry because of their economic importance and depend on locally manufactured materials.

The project, entitled “Raising the Efficiency of Photovoltaic Solar Cells by Cooling in Summer,” participated in the exhibition of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering for projects, which was held last October at the University of Damascus, with the participation of 195 projects from Syrian public and private universities.
