The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the Friday December 2 attack on the Pakistani embassy in Kabul on Saturday, confirming that it targeted the head of mission.
The IS assures, in a press release published on SITE, "
to have attacked the ambassador of Pakistan
", described as "
traitor
", confirming the version of the Pakistani Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who had denounced an "
assassination attempt
" against the head of mission.
A suspect was arrested after the shooting which seriously injured an embassy guard.
Although Pakistan has not officially recognized the Taliban government, it kept its embassy open after the Islamists returned to power in August 2021.
Complicated relations with the Taliban
Pakistan has complicated relations with the Taliban, which it is accused of having helped behind the scenes since their emergence in the early 1990s and after the American invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, while officially providing its support in Washington.
The Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, alongside the withdrawal of US and foreign troops from the country.
