Customs inspectors at the Allenby border crossing today (Sunday) thwarted the smuggling of gold from Jordan to Israel worth about four million shekels.
The gold was found in a routine check that was done for a Jordanian citizen who wanted to enter the country, and he was questioned and handed over to the authorities in Jordan.
The driver, who held a tourist visa, declared upon entering Israel that he had nothing to declare.
However, during an inspection of the Nissan vehicle, a hidden compartment was found between the front seats, containing approximately 20 gold bars worth a total of approximately four million shekels.
