City of Dachau awards large marquee to Augustiner – beer price rises sharply

The city has repositioned itself in terms of folk festivals.

That means some changes for 2023 and they hit the wallets of the visitors.

Dachau - the time of the corona break - as a reminder: In 2020 and 2021 there was no folk festival due to the pandemic - the city had used it to reposition itself in terms of folk festivals.

It all started with the beer: Instead of Spaten- there was to be Augustiner beer from now on.

In addition, after a corresponding vote by the cultural committee responsible for the folk festival, "the connection between the content of the Dachau folk festival and a low beer price" was abandoned, as it was called at the time.

In other words, the price of beer increased significantly – from €6.30 in 2019 to €8.60 in 2022.

Volksfest 2023: Beer price in Dachau will be 9.10 euros

In addition, the so-called "Guidelines for Admission to the Dachau Folk Festival" have been revised.

The biggest innovation can be found under point 4. The first sentence of the "Provisions for the allocation of the large marquee" has been since May: "The large marquee at the Dachau Volksfest will be awarded to a brewery." It will not be different than before a Dachau innkeeper wanted as operator.

In accordance with this requirement and bearing in mind that the Augustiner beer was extremely well received in the summer, the culture committee on Wednesday in a closed session awarded the large tent to Augustiner-Bräu Wagner KG from Munich for the years 2023 and 2024.

According to the town hall, the price for a mass of beer will “probably” be EUR 9.10 in the coming year.

Volksfest 2023: Hosts remain the same

After all, the landlord remains the same.

After the vote of the city council, Ewald Zechner will remain responsible for the hospitality.

There is also no change in the so-called small marquee operation: Ulrike Daumer-Rudorfer will also be allowed to run the Franziskaner garden in the next two years.

According to Tobias Schneider, head of the cultural office, the change in allocation from an inn to a brewery is a "logical story" and "state of affairs".

All major folk festivals are now no longer awarded to innkeepers, but to the breweries - see Munich.

Working together, breweries are simply a “very good, very safe story”.

He has never heard of a municipality having had bad experiences with this model.

The city, according to Schneider, "is in a much easier position now."

Brewery has to take care of a landlord from the district

Because: According to the award guidelines, the large marquee "to preserve the communal identity of the Dachau folk festival requires a resident or active landlord in Dachau".

But the brewery has to take care of that.

Only if the brewery cannot find a Dachau innkeeper is it allowed to “suggest a supraregional innkeeper”.

The key word is "propose".

According to Schneider, the city is still responsible for “the final decision” when it comes to the landlord.

Since Ewald Zechner, whom the Augustiner brewery proposed for the next two years, is not only a Dachau resident according to the guidelines, but also "reliable and suitable" and has "corresponding references", the matter was easy for the culture committee to decide.

The extent to which the new beer price was discussed in the non-public meeting was not revealed afterwards.

According to the Head of the Cultural Office, it has long been a matter of fact that the times of very cheap beer are over: "We gave up advertising cheap beer prices this year." And 9.10 euros for a mass of beer is in Compared to other festivals and still "cheap" given the general inflation.
