District – In order to protect the animals in the Rotwand area (district of Miesbach) in winter, the district office has issued an entry ban.

This is valid until July 14th.

More and more people are drawn to the mountains in the winter months, whether for hiking, touring or to enjoy the untouched snowy landscape.

However, this disturbs some animal species, some of which are even threatened with extinction, which urgently need a place of retreat.

The Croda Rossa area is one of the last refuges in the Bavarian Alps for black grouse and capercaillie, both on the Red List of endangered species.

The ever-increasing number of hikers in these areas endangers the retreat of the animals.

It took two years for the lower hunting and nature conservation authorities, together with the Miesbach district office, to designate the wildlife sanctuary and issue a ban on entry.

The ban is intended to protect the endangered animal species and give them the much-needed retreat to recover over the winter months.

In concrete terms, this means for winter sports enthusiasts: certain areas around the Croda Rossa are taboo for people from December to mid-July.

Hikers can find out more about the area that is protected during this period on more than 14 boards.

The ban covers a 320 hectare, non-contiguous area around Lempersberg, Benzingspitz, Wilde Fräulein, or Jägerkamp and Marold Schneid.

Decree first imposed last winter

What may seem somewhat arbitrary to winter sports enthusiasts has a serious background.

Florian Bossert, area manager for the Mangfall mountains, explains: "Winter touring and hiking means that grouse have to flee their winter habitats and can no longer display undisturbed courtship and raise their offspring in spring".

For this reason, the decree was imposed for the first time in winter 2021/2022 and is already showing a positive trend.

"We carefully weighed up the protection of the animals, in this case the black grouse, and the understandable desire of those looking for relaxation to experience nature and sports," reports Josef Faas, Team Leader for Technical Nature Conservation at the Miesbach District Office.

The two nature conservation rangers Andreas Koepferrl and Alexander Römer as well as the responsible area manager Theresa Creator also speak to the visitors directly on site and explain about the wildlife protection area.

During the first blocking period, they encountered people who were traveling in the area despite the ban 165 times.

"The most common objection was that you hadn't seen the signs," reveals Römer.

"The rangers will also be happy to help inform guests about the wildlife sanctuaries, to sensitize them to the topic and to steer them spatially in the coming winter," says REO project manager Thorsten Schär.
