Callisto's character designer reports on the impact of animation on the game: "Cartoons convey the message"

The Callisto Protocol Official Launch Trailer (Striking Distance Studios)

The

Callisto Protocol

game that was released last weekend is considered one of the biggest and most anticipated games of the year.

This is a spiritual continuation for which Glenn Schofield, the original creator of the iconic horror trilogy

Dead Space

, is responsible .

Ahead of the launch of the new game, Calisto Protocol's lead character designer,

Glauco Longhi

(who also worked on games like God of War and Uncharted) was interviewed and talked about some of the inspiration he received for the game's undead creatures.

Or rather the way they move and behave.

Although most of the inspiration came from science fiction films such as The Eighth Passenger or A Nightmare on the Edge of the Horizon, some of it came from an unexpected source, such as series and cartoons: "We designed all the creatures in the game according to different needs. For example, we designed a character that walks and runs on the walls. So we had to think about A way in which the creature would run and climb faster. We drew inspiration from cartoons. Even SpongeBob. We looked at the style and the way the characters move. Also in the movement, but also in the horror aspects, like the blood, the way organs are removed, we pushed the style and put an emphasis on these actions. Cartoons do this well. Pixar, Disney, whoever - they 'get the message', clear and smooth."

So despite the very realistic design that Calisto Protocol adopts, cartoons (and animation in particular) allow to exceed the limits of reality, and when it comes to a horror-survival-science-fiction game, the decision to draw inspiration from animation is definitely refreshing.

Another example of a game that drew inspiration from cartoons is Cuphead, which fully adopted the style of animation studios such as Disney, Fleischer and MGM from cartoons in the 1930s.

Cuphead has also since won an animated children's series on Netflix.

Despite the high expectations Callisto Protocol had, it received mostly average reviews.

Most of the complaints came from Xbox and PC players, who complained about performance and stability issues of the game.
