Shannon Pummer is Upper Bavaria's best industrial mechanic graduate.

The young woman works in a male domain and gave the Tölzer Kurier an insight into her work at Hawe in Sachsenkam.

Sachsenkam/Lenggries – She is Upper Bavaria's best industrial mechanic graduate: Shannon Pummer, 22, from Lenggries.

The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) recently honored her in a ceremony (we reported).

Shannon Pummer successfully completed her training at Hawe in Sachsenkam.

Now the young woman continues to take off.

Math and physics were her favorite subjects

Shannon Pummer knew early on that she wanted to pursue a technical career.

"I've always been interested in it.

Math and physics were my favorite subjects,” she says, laughing.

Even as a child, she tinkered and made things with her father.

Nevertheless, after graduating from the Hohenburg Gymnasium, it wasn't immediately clear to her which direction she should go - studies or training?

She came across Hawe through a job advertisement.

"I thought that sounds good.

And I quickly realized that it was fun and just right for me.”

"A very wide-ranging profession"

What exactly does an industrial mechanic do?

"It's a really wide-ranging profession," enthuses Shannon Pummer.

Initially, the apprentices were introduced to metal as a material with saws and files.

Finally, it goes to the machines for drilling, turning and milling.

"You learn all the basics of forming, working, and bending metal" — how to make something out of a block of metal.

"That's very exciting." In the further course of her training, she learned how to work with computer-aided machines and all kinds of different types of controls.

"It's different every day and a lot of fun."

She hoped she would do so well, but didn't really expect it.

Even if she admits: "It was easy for me at school because I already knew a lot of theory from work."

In training she was never treated like an exotic woman

There are not many women who take up this profession.

"It's more of a male-dominated industry," says Shannon Pummer.

There was only one other woman in her class besides her.

“Before I went to a girls' school, now I almost only deal with boys.

It's fun," she says, laughing.

She has the impression that the girls who choose the profession are 100 percent behind it.

She is very glad that she was never treated like an exotic woman during her training.

By the way: Another girl has started this apprenticeship year and another has applied for the coming year.

Pummer completes trainee program at headquarters

For Shannon Pummer, the journey continued in September.

She started a trainee program at the Hawe headquarters in Aschheim near Munich.

There she now goes through the various departments and gets to know all the teams.

"It's very interesting," she says enthusiastically about her new job.

She likes the company, work and people at Hawe

Hawe training manager Albert Gast emphasizes that Shannon Pummer's path is not usual: "Normally you only get to the head office when you have proven yourself in the factory." This is a process of several years in which you prove yourself for the higher task could.

"Shannon skipped that, deservedly." But this is not only related to her excellent final grade (1.0).

“Work performance is much more important,” says Gast.

In addition, personal maturity, works manager Knut Krekemeyer completes.

"In Shannon's current position, you sometimes have to assert yourself in front of long-standing employees.

You have to be able to do that.” He is convinced that his graduate can do it.

Recommending her for the head office was also a step towards binding the promising young employee to the company.

"That's worth a lot to Hawe." It wasn't difficult for her to stay, says Shannon Pummer.

"The company, the work, the people, I like it here."

After 18 months in the trainee program, she has numerous options.

But she doesn't know what will happen next for her.

Pummer was the best of over 1000 graduates

Gast and Krekemeyer are very proud of the excellent performance of their trainees.

"To be the best out of over 1000 graduates is quite an achievement," emphasizes Gast.

Precisely because there are many well-known companies in the region that also provide training, this was not necessarily to be expected.

"So we are very happy."
