They have yet to finally decide how and when the system will be changed, but the version that receives the widest support is to change the system so that supreme judges are chosen by voting in the Knesset

Statement of intentions:

Likud is considering not predetermining representatives to the committee for the appointment of judges out of a desire to change the selection of judges and abolish the committee.

The forming coalition has not yet decided who the representatives from the government and the Knesset will be on the committee for appointing judges.

Likud explained to the coalition partners that they are considering not appointing representatives to the committee for the appointment of judges in the coalition agreements due to the possibility and desire that exists in the forming coalition to abolish the committee for the appointment of judges, and to change the selection method of the judges.

The forming coalition has yet to finally decide how and when to change the system, but the version that receives the widest support is to change the system, so that supreme judges will be chosen by a vote in the Knesset.

The other versions talk about strengthening the power and expanding the representation of the politicians in the committee over the judges and representatives of the Bar Association.

However, the decision on the issue will be required to receive Netanyahu's approval, and as mentioned, they have still decided on the issue at the moment.

Also, apart from the appointment of supreme judges, the question arose whether to keep the committee on the matter of appointments to the lower courts in the district and peace and, if so, in what format.

Representation on the committee for the appointment of judges is usually one of the positions desired by the many parties in the coalition negotiations. "Israel Hayom" has learned that Ben Gabir and Smotrich also demanded representation on their behalf on the committee, but now, as mentioned, they have been told that it has not yet been decided whether to address this in the coalition agreements due to the desire to change the selection method and to even abolish the committee.

The decision on the method of electing judges is expected to be dramatic in the designated government and it can change the upper body so that it has a conservative majority.

In October 2023, judges Esther Hayut and Anat Baron, who are identified as activists, will retire, a year later, in October 2024, judge Uzi Fogelman, who is identified as an activist, will retire, and in September 2025, judge Yosef Elron, who is identified as a conservative judge, will retire.
