Many Vietnamese and overseas media reported that three related high-level officials passed away one after another before and after Zhang Meilan was arrested.

Among them, Ruan Fanghong passed away on October 9, two days after his arrest. The report of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) even published photos of Ruan Fanghong's obituary.

Nguyen Tien Thanh, another senior executive of Xinyue Securities who had issued bonds for Zhang Meilan's company, also passed away on October 6, the day before Zhang's arrest.

Real estate company executive Nguyen Ngoc Duong also committed suicide by jumping off a building on the 14th of the same month, and left a suicide note. Vietnamese newspapers even published his obituary and suicide note.
